Opatija is well-connected and easily accessible from major European hubs. Depending on where you are traveling from, here are the best ways to reach the conference venue.
While Opatija does not have its own airport, several regional and international airports are within easy reach:
Rijeka Airport (RJK) – The Closest Option: Located on the island of Krk, about 40 km (40 minutes) from Opatija. From here, you can take an airport shuttle to the main Rijeka bus station, and then transfer to Opatija, or book a direct taxi/transfer.
Zagreb International Airport (ZAG) – The Largest Hub: Located about 175 km away. This is often the best option for international intercontinental flights. From Zagreb, you can take a direct bus to Opatija (approx. 3 hours) or rent a car.
Other Nearby Airports: You can also fly into Pula (PUY) in Croatia (75 km), Trieste (TRS) in Italy (105 km), or Ljubljana (LJU) in Slovenia (135 km). All have bus or shuttle connections to Opatija/Rijeka.
Traveling by bus is one of the most popular and affordable ways to reach Opatija, especially from Zagreb or neighboring countries.
From Zagreb: There are multiple daily, direct bus lines from the Zagreb Central Bus Station to the Opatija Bus Station. The journey takes about 3 hours. Providers include Arriva, FlixBus, and Brioni. You can buy tickets online in advance.
From Rijeka: If your flight, train, or bus drops you off in Rijeka (the nearest large city), Opatija is just 14 km away. Head to the Rijeka Bus Station and take the local public bus No. 32 (Autotrolej). It runs frequently along the coast and takes about 25 minutes.
If you prefer traveling by train, there are two primary stations to look for:
Opatija-Matulji (5 km from Opatija): This is the closest train station. From here, you will need to take a quick taxi ride or local bus down to the Opatija city center.
Rijeka Train Station (12 km from Opatija): Rijeka is a major rail hub with better international connections. Once at the Rijeka station, you can easily catch a taxi or take local bus No. 32 to Opatija.
Opatija is easily accessible via modern highways.
From Zagreb: It is a relatively easy 2-hour drive via the A1/A6 highways.
Parking: Keep in mind that parking in Opatija can be limited during busy periods. If you are staying at the Grand Hotel 4 Opatijska Cvijeta or Hotel Continental, check with the hotel regarding parking reservations and daily rates.
